OK. I know you guys are mostly into vintage scoots, but I really don't have a whole lot of time to wrench, plus I like being able to ride something and not worry that I'm astride a piece of valuable hardware.

Next, I live in a rural area, about 6 miles from the nearest town. Most roads are 2-lane farm-to-market roads.

I weigh about 200 pounds and almost always ride alone.

The only scooters locally available are the major Japanese brands, plus the Yamaha place is selling Vespas. The only other choice will be when a nearby lawn equipment place begins selling Kymcos.

Treat it as theoretical. What would you guys buy in this situation?

Hey Mark, my favorite I think would be this http://www.yamaha-motor.com/sport/products/modelhome/529/home.aspx

The "Toolbox on wheels?"'  Cute but at 50cc, probably to light and slow for my purposes.  Now if they made a 250 or even a 200 in that size,  it might work.
That's pretty neat.  It being Chinese, I would be wary of the quality control but wouldn't mind seeing one.

I've seen one in person. They look pretty darn good! Josh did a review of one on http://www.scootmagazine.com/

Check it out!

Which issue?  It just opens to the Scoot! page.
I asked Josh...

That Chinese bike looks really nice!!  If you have a link for the review please share!  I have a 2009 yamaha vino 125, am 205 lbs, and have found it to be, for the most part, adequate power wise.  But I live in western pa with lots of hills, so wanted more power.  I have a performance malossi variator in it, a 150cc big bore kit, along with a few other performance mods.  It'll do 55 just about anywhere without an issue.  Vino's can be modded to perform just about however you need it to, but stock they are pretty decent, for a 125.

The review of the Hammerhead La Vita is in the June 2010 issue, which is #56.

Ok Great, I'll search back through mine for that, thanks!
